Custom Cuts failing during Cut selection process

This issue has been happening occasionally since I have been using this product, just getting around to posting now. Currently running the 2.6.6. version of MCEBuddy on a Windows 10 Intel i7 desktop system.

The issue I have occasionally is that while using the Custom Cuts app sliding the bar and selecting the window to cut, at some point in the process, Custom Cuts just displays a black window. The slider bar and timer still advance, but since I can’t see the video to select what I want to remove, I have to stop and start that video or movie over again and it works fine.

Any suggestions on how to stop this from occurring? I wish this product was a simple install and just have it post the mp4 to process to remove commercials, but, at least the way I have it installed, it does a pretty bad job, either missing ads, or starting early/late in the process.

It looks like you’re encountering a problem with the Custom Cuts application where the video window turns black, making it impossible to select your cuts. I haven’t found any existing topics directly addressing “Custom Cuts black window” in the #Custom Cuts category.

This sounds like a display issue within the Custom Cuts application. Here are a few suggestions to troubleshoot this:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your Intel i7 desktop’s graphics drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause display anomalies in video-intensive applications.
  2. MCEBuddy Version: While you’re on 2.6.6, there might be newer versions available that have addressed such glitches. It’s always a good idea to check for updates.
  3. Video Codecs: MCEBuddy relies on video codecs. While unlikely to be the sole cause of a black window, ensuring your system has a healthy set of codecs (e.g., K-Lite Codec Pack) can sometimes resolve unexpected video playback issues.
  4. Hardware Acceleration: Sometimes, disabling hardware acceleration within MCEBuddy (if an option exists, I’d need to check) or your system’s display settings can help with rendering issues.

Regarding your comment about MCEBuddy’s commercial removal performance, that’s a separate but important point. The accuracy of commercial removal can depend on various factors, including the source video, the detection settings, and the MCEBuddy version. If you’d like to discuss that further, we can explore that in a separate thread or after we tackle the Custom Cuts issue.

The black box while displaying is an issue with the windows media codecs. Custom cuts uses the window media codecs to render the video and the built in codecs can’t decode the video it ends up showing as a black frame in custom cuts. You may want to try installing the FFDShow codec pack that ships with MCEBuddy which could help in some cases. You could try other codecs packs but I cannot recommend any specific ones other than FFDShow.
