Handbrake crashing with hardware encoding on new PC

I built a new PC and have an intel motherboard/CPU but an AMD GPU. When doin x265 encodes MY PC would convert a 24min anime show in about 20-30min. I tried using the AMD VCE setting and was amazed when the same file converted in about 2 min. I was able to convert a season of shows, once. I noticed there were some frames where the encoding looked pixelated so I was going to try adjusting the preset tune from balanced to quality. since the first time I have not been able to consistently get any setting to complete an encode using the AMD VCE encoder. All my encodes began failing after about 5-10 seconds usually with the app crashing. I tried changing my power settings from balanced to high performance and was able to get to about 90% before the encode would fail or HB would crash. When the app doesn’t crash and I am able to see the logs I noticed in the logs handbrake keeps trying to load nvEncodeAPI64.dll… which is for NVidia?
I tried downloading the .dll and placing it into the System 32 folder and then the log error says unable to load nvcuda.dll (also an NVIDIA library) after adding that dll the error log then says “Cannot load cuDevicePrimaryCtxRetain” The encodes fail after only a couple seconds so I removed both dll files from the system 32 folder. I cannot get HB to consistently complete any encodes using the AMD VCE encoder now. Progress seemed to get a little further using AMD VCE over the 10-bit AMD VCE but neither reliably complete an encode. Switching back to just H.265 I am once again able to get the same video to encode but it takes about 20-30 mins and the quality is not as good as the one time I was able to complete an encode using the AMD VCE setting and it succeeded. After seeing the result of using the AMD VCE encoder I would really like to get it to be reliable but seem unable to figure out why the encodes keep failing and the app keeps crashing?

Will need the conversion logs to see what’s going on. If handbrake itself is crashing then it could be a bad graphics driver. Also try to update handbrake by downloading the latest 64bit build and replacing it in the mcebuddy installation folder and see if that helps.

I believe 1.7.3 is the latest version… how would I do the update you recommended? I have one of my conversion logs on the handbrake forum. I’ll try to find a link

not the answer you want but the best encoder is going to be the quicksync on the UHD 770 that is on 12th gen+ Intel CPU’s (not yours though as it has no iGPU)

The NVencode and the Cuda is for Nvidia cards but it appeared that you did select the AMD encoder

I sadly went away from MCBuddy as I have thousands of files I wanted to convert and it just didnt handle it well. I use Tdarr now.

That UHD 770 using the quicksync is no joke though, runs circles around nvidia encoder/decoder which runs circles around the AMD cards. AMD has never been known to have good encode/decoders and sadly most software just trails behind in proper support.

What software would you recommend I use to take advantage of my GPU for encoding as it doesn’t seem to play nice with Handbrake? I have managed to get a couple of encodes to finish but sadly nothing consistent. Only 1 out of 10 encodes make it past 90%. I did see that with the AMD VCE setting I averaged 400fps during conversion when successful!

I’m assuming you’re having the same issue with the latest handbrake build also. If so, try changing the profile you’re using in MCEBuddy to use ffmpeg instead of handbrake

If the latest version of handbrake is working for you then just download the latest version ofte handbrake CLI exe file and drop it on to the handbrake directory where MCEBuddy is installed.
