Weird characters for music notes in subtitles

I’m having some weird characters show up in my subtitles for music lyrics. My sources are HDHomerun DVR (sometimes Tivo via KMTTG). I am playing back on VLC. All on the same Win10 box.

If I need to do something like this post, I can do that. I’m just not sure what’s happening to correct it.

Here’s what the subtitles look like. I think they’re supposed to be musical notes symbols, as these are surrounding lyrics to a song playing in the video on both sides.

I have VLC set to default subtitles to UTF-8 encoding. I think they should display something like musical notes. I don’t know the specific character mappings, or if it is a character set encoding thing (Windows-1252, UTF-8, Latin-9, etc.) or a font thing.

Definitely a character encoding thing. Can you attach your conversion log and the srt file also so we can see what’s going on?

Sorry about not getting back to you. I manually processed the file by extracting the subtitles, fixing the SRT file and then re-merging it back into the file. This is another reason why I use MKV containers - only one file to keep track of.

If you have the original SRT file please attach it as it would helpful to debug what’s going on and how we could potentially fix it while adding the SRT file to the final container.
