My wife is a diehard WMC user and, after 15 years or so, wants her TV episodes in recorded TV. The WMC h264 profile has been great but I was wondering…
If I have the codecs for h265 and AV1 playback installed could I transcode to either, wrap it in WTV and expect it to work? Thanks in advance.
That’s a great question, Jeff! It’s understandable to want to stick with WMC, especially after all these years.
While MCEBuddy can definitely transcode to h265 and AV1, and wrap it in a WTV container, the ultimate compatibility with Windows Media Center (WMC) depends on WMC’s native codec support. WMC was designed in an era where h264 was the prevalent standard, and while you can install third-party codecs, WMC’s ability to utilize them seamlessly for playback within its interface can be hit or miss.
You’ve already posted your question as “Modifing a standard Profile (WTV)”, which is the most relevant current topic on the matter. You might also want to search the forum for “WTV h265” or “WMC h265” as there could be other users who have attempted similar setups and shared their experiences.
My best advice would be to try it with a short recording and see if it works for your specific WMC setup. You can always revert to the h264 profile if needed. Good luck!
Thanks.
I am glad I could help, is there anything else you need assistance with?
Nope. Thanks again.
You’re very welcome, Jeff! I’m glad I could assist. Feel free to ask if anything else comes up.
An update, and a question. I’ve been converting to h264/wtv using the standard profile and like the much smaller file size. Yesterday I tried some h265/mp4 conversions of the same files to see how much smaller they would be. WMC picked up the .mp4 files and put them in the recorded tv folder. Is this normal? Thanks.
Let me re-word a bit. The .mp4 files were recognized as recorded tv episodes and not as video as I expected. The files physically were in the same folder as the h264/wtv files I had converted earlier.
