# Codec Packs cause crashing of WMP/WMC

**Do NOT install codec packs like KLite and Shark007.** These packs install the codecs using registry and others hacks that can permanently damage the windows setup.
If you’ve installed these codec packs and try to use WMP, WMC or any products that use Windows Media Foundation, they may cause a CRASH. These codec packs can destabilize and cause Windows media foundation to malfunction.
The only **SAFE** codec pack that we have tested (that appears to plays by Windows rules) is **LAVFilters**. It plays well with Windows and can have a clean uninstall if required.

If you happen to have installed KLite or Shark007, try to uninstall them (it can be very difficult to undo some changes made by these packs which can cause permanent damage to the windows setup). If it does not work, use this tool to try and repair/reset the default Windows Media Foundation settings and disable the codec packs.

If that does not work, reinstall Windows. _MCEBuddy is not related with these crashes_, the mp4, wtv, mkv files are ALL FINE, _codec packs and graphics drivers are responsible for crashes_.

Are you sure it’s Klite causing your crash? I’ve been using Klite for years. Running WMC on Windows 10, locked down at version 19042, at the moment. I’ve never had a crash related to Klite.

I’ve been using MCE-B & WMC for years. I recently switched my 2k TV to a 4k TV. After a few weeks I started getting Codec errors when I try to watch a saved show or a current show. I’m thinking I might need a better graphics card. Or would a different set of codecs fix it. I’m totally down right now as it fails every time. I know this is probably not a MCE problem but I thought you might know the answer.

Based on what was said above, I fixed my problem. I uninstalled Klite using Revo. My system works normally again. Thanks for the hint.
